The second Shounen Club (ザ少年倶楽部) for August began with the three elder members of Sexy Zone singing “Sexy Summer ni Yuki ga Furu”. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you already know how I feel about this song. If you haven’t: I hate it. I still consider it a mess of randomly assembled musical phrases and sound effects rather than a proper composition. The dance is weak, too (lots of arm-waving, very little leg work).
Thankfully, they didn’t spend much time singing it, as A.B.C-Z quickly took the stage for a verse or two of “Walking on Clouds” Not the best A.B.C-Z song by a long shot, but certainly an improvement on “Sexy Summer” – especially thanks to Hashimoto-kun’s singing.
They’re still missing Totsuka Shota-kun, by the way.
The pattern for this opening is obvious – each of the debuted groups get to do a teensy bit of a song – so I wasn’t surprised to see Johnny’s West take the stage next for “Banzai Yume Mansai!”
It’s not my kind of song and for some reason always reminds me of an AKB song, but they had the most sophisticated choreography of the three groups.
I don’t like opening medleys in general, but at least this one eventually got the audience pumped up.
Hosts Kawai Fumito-kun and Kiriyama Akito-kun talked to the members of Johnny’s West, and Daiki Shigeoka-kun got to introduce the theme of the show: Summer. Let’s see how many summer songs they actually do (I’m not going to count “Sexy Summer” since it can’t decide what season it’s in, has Christmas themes throughout it, and they wore Santa costumes when initially promoting it).
SZ’s Kento, Fuma, and Shori immediately got to take the stage again, and they performed a song I haven’t heard before – “Matta Nante Nash!”. In a nice move, the three of them started out in the midst of the audience behind the stage.
This song had some nice vocals involved, but the music tapped a lot of familiar themes that are very dated – very Showa, if you will. At least it’s a coherent song, though.
With the performers in the stands like that for most of the song and otherwise barely moving, it was pretty obvious that this song was being rushed out without any choreography. We didn’t even get the standard minimal arm movements.
Besides the total lack of dancing, this was obviously a song that would have benefited from the two younger members – Matsushima Sou-kun and Marius-kun – and their absence was too noticeable.
Altogether, that was tremendously disappointing stage. The song was dated and didn’t have a hook, there wasn’t even the barest semblance of choreography, and the vocals weren’t strong enough to make up for all the things the performance lacked.
The episode continued to go wrong for me as we got the backstage segment Tsukada-kun and Hamada-kun now handle together. I’ve made it a policy that I want to see them spend this time with the elder juniors rather than debuted members, so even though Kikuchi Fuma-kun is an interesting character, I have to give this a thumbs-down.
First, Fuma-kun was prompted to consult Tsukada-kun about a problem he has, and he said he wants to find interesting things to say – he has trouble with that. I suppose it’s sort of true that Fuma-kun is more comfortable reacting to what other people say than bringing up subjects himself. Unfortunately, Tsukada-kun replies that he’s probably the wrong person to talk to about that problem.
Tsukada-kun recommends that Fuma-kun should consult Kawai-kun or Kiriyama-kun instead.
It got worse – the next prompt told Fuma-kun to do a gourmet report. This is one thing I thought I could escape from by watching SC – I thought this was a safe haven from all the food segments – but so much for that idea. They’ve never had someone do a gourmet report on SC before, have they?
Tsukada-kun completed with Fuma-kun in doing the report.
Amusing though the three characters were . . .
. . . this segment remains way too slow for SC, it isn’t focused on the legions of juniors who are robbed of precious camera time, and now they’re adding food into the mix. Very bad.
Finally, the next performance offered something worth watching – the Fab Five (I still haven’t come up with a good name for Jinguji, Iwahashi, Kishi, Miyachika, and Abe) performing KAT-TUN’s “BIRTH”.
Now, I’d much rather see them get their own song to do, of course, but there’s a long line of juniors waiting for one of those. For now, I was at least happy to see them get a cool song, sharp costumes without feathers, and the first full choreography of the evening.
And the singing! Kishi Yuta-kun can really sing! (and he sort of strikes me as an Ohno-like figure for this group in terms of his sharp dancing, improving vocals, and quirky behavior) Jinguji-kun is improving, though he has the most work to do as his voice is the thinnest. Genki-kun was solid. Abe-kun and Miyachika-kun sang together, so I didn’t get much read on Miyachika’s voice. Altogether, though, this is quality.
That was the first highlight of the episode, and really the only thing so far that’s worth watching more than once.
Next up was the Shokura News segment. Tanaka Juri-kun and Morohoshi Shoki-kun interviewed Kawai Fumito-kun (wait . . . couldn’t they have just done this in NHK Hall? He’s right there!) about playing Faust on stage.
It’s not quite the Faust that I know, but I suppose it has some of the key elements. Well, at least it has Mephistopheles (written in katakana Ophistopheles for some reason) and can you believe Goseki-kun is playing him? Not only is Goseki-kun playing the devil, but in full make-up and long hair he sort of resembles Takizawa-kun.
At the same time, Kawai-kun was sort of reminiscent of the Takarazuka Revue performers when the devil turns him into a handsome man:
Other than having Mephistopheles and Faust, though, I saw nothing that I recognized from the traditional story. I don’t remember Faust being a prisoner of any sort – he was a successful scholar who was dissatisfied and so sold his soul for unlimited knowledge and pleasure. Beyond that, this is supposed to be a musical, but we saw none of that, and the subtitle on Kawai-kun’s shirt is “swordsmen of love”, and I have no idea where that comes in.
This doesn’t seem like love to me, though it was apparently the kiss scene:
Tanaka-kun and Morohoshi-kun are both good talkers, so this went completely smoothly. Did they have to bring more food out, though? Even if it’s just shaved ice, this is the second time in this episode we’ve seen people eating. This is supposed to be exclusively a calorie-burning show, people! Stop it!
Well, Hashimoto-kun from A.B.C-Z is going to get a workout, at least – his performance of “DANCE!” is next.
Looks like we’re quickly getting to peak choreography here after a slow start to the show.
The song is an electronic dance song. Not my style, but I could appreciate the difficulty of the performance itself.
Hashimoto-kun is always good highlight material, let’s face it, and this stage was no exception.
The Shokura Blog segment featured Matsukura Kaito-kun, who decided to talk about a photo taken on one of his days off.
Turns out it was a photo of him and Matsuda Genta-kun watching a baseball game. Good choice. On top of that, they were apparently sitting close to SMAP’s Nakai-san, and that fact distracted them from the game.
The small stage performance this time was “Brother” as performed by Nagase Ren-kun and Hirano Sho-kun.
It wasn’t the best stage I’ve seen from these two, but not bad, either. Average. The choreography felt a bit sloppy, especially so soon after Hashimoto-kun’s song. There was better than average camera work this time, perhaps because the focus was so firmly on the two main performers.
I’d like to see more Kin Kan and Naniwa Oji on SC. We’ve been getting a lot of Nagase-kun and Hirano-kun and not enough of the rest. These two have talent, but aren’t sufficient on their own – they both occupy the same role.
Shokura You Bin is another segment that I want to see juniors involved in . . .
. . . and this time we did indeed get juniors to answer the fan’s question. Jesse-kun, Kyomoto Taiga-kun, and Yasui Kentaro-kun offered their services to Kento-kun and Fuma-kun.
I don’t think I’ve seen Taiga-kun in one of these, or else it’s been a very long time. The topic was how to invite a girl on a date to the sea, and Taiga-kun played the girl receiving Yasui-kun’s offer.
In round two, Jesse-kun played the girl as Taiga-kun made the invitation. The first thing Taiga-kun did was note how big Jesse-kun was, and Jesse took that to refer to . . . well, you’re just going to have to watch it.
That one seemed very rehearsed, but it was also funnier than round one.
Jesse-kun decided to take his own turn, nominating Yasui-kun for the role of the girl. After the humorous option, will Jesse-kun go with a doki doki option, or will he play it for laughs?
That was a very good talk segment – an increasingly rare occurrence these days.
The same juniors were involved in the next song – Kis-My-Ft2’s “She! Her! Her!”.
The three of them were joined by Masuda Ryo, Okamoto Kauan, Iwamoto Hikaru, Hanzawa Akatsuki, Morita Myuto, Sanada Yuma, Tanaka Juri, Morimoto Shintaro, Nozawa Yuki, Kouchi Yugo, Fukusawa Tatsuya, Matsumura Hokuto, Morohoshi Shoki and . . . and . . . and what the heck do they need so many people with microphones!?
I mean, this is more than double the number of members of Kis-My-Ft2, and some of these juniors have voices that actually clash. Masuda-kun and Okamoto-kun don’t sound good together at all. In general, the sound was muddy and the stage was too crowded. Not only were there sixteen people singing, but also backdancers.
This is ridiculous for a song like “She! Her! Her!”.
Again, it’s a symptom of the fact that Johnny’s doesn’t know what to do with all these elder juniors. Or, more precisely, they’re deliberately not grouping them properly for some strange and unspecified reason.
That was horrible. It was a great display of what is wrong with the junior ranks right now, especially in this age group.
It wasn’t this way when Tackey-san was running Shounen Club – back then, there were groups and a huge proportion of juniors ended up debuting because they developed fanbases and were able to grow them over a long period of time.
That’s not what Tackey-san and Tsubasa-san talked about, but since they were asked to make a poem out of syllables of the title of their song, I don’t think they’d mind me focusing on the plight of the juniors.
This segment somehow managed to elicit the same face from Kawai-kun . . .
. . . and Tsubasa-san. Only very briefly, though, when they were both handling the “tsu” line.
Anyway, they proceeded to sing “Dakinatsu” – the same song they did in last week’s episode, except in flowery costumes.
They still put full effort into it, but I would have liked to see them do another song – any other song. It’s not like they’re on SC that often, and getting the same song twice seems like a wasted opportunity. At the very least, isn’t there a B-side to this single?
Oh, well. I can’t really call that one a highlight this time – the flower costumes were an eyesore and last week’s rendition was fresher.
Junior ni Q once again asked the juniors for fun summer vacation ideas. Morimoto Shintaro-kun started things off with . . . shaved ice. Haven’t we already covered it in this episode?
Masuda-kun told a story, but I couldn’t follow it.
Takahashi Kaito-kun talked about surviving on an uninhabited island. Now, this might not sound like an enticing vacation plan, but this is a very common challenge on Japanese TV especially around this time of year. Perhaps Kaito-kun got inspired by a show.
That was a good one, but Jinguji-kun has something better – he wants to launch fireworks. And I mean launch – becoming a craftsman and handling the big festival shows. I’m sure it’s satisfying work if you can get it.
Matsumura-kun said something about a pool live – some sort of pool performance?
Anyway, points to Takahashi Kaito-kun and Jinguji-kun for the relatively original (and easily understood) ideas.
Johnny’s West had their stage next, and they did “Break Out!”. This song started with Shigeoka Daiki-kun and Kotaki Nozomu-kun on stage, but not just their voices. The voices were also highly processed.
Musically, this song was over-produced and I can’t imagine listening to it for enjoyment. I didn’t hear much coherence in it, and nor was there any in the dance.
It’s possible that the song was simply not my style, though, and someone out there actually likes this sort of thing.
The ending song this time was KinKi Kids’ “Natsu no Ousama”. Except for this, only Tackey & Tsubasa bothered to do a summer-related song. That’s sort of sad, isn’t it?
Well, at least “Natsu no Ousama” is an excellent ensemble song to end on. The debuted members and elder juniors all shouted it out at the tops of their lungs.
After the show, we got an omake segment, and Shori-kun’s guest was Shigeoka-kun, and Shori wanted them to work together to create a poem out of the syllables of “Dakinatsu” just as Tackey & Tsubasa had done earlier. There was so much laughing during this, I wish I knew why (except that they’re both prone to laughter and good at it).
This was not an episode I would watch all the way through again. There were some very isolated highlights I would watch again, but otherwise the rest was forgettable.
The Fab Five performing “BIRTH” tops my list of things that should go into the archive for future viewing, especially since we’re going to continue to see these guys develop. Hashimoto-kun’s solo was impressive. As far as performances, that’s pretty much it.
The Shokura You Bin segment was great this time, Junior ni Q was okay, Shokura News was good, and the Omake was worth a laugh. The only talk segment that dragged was the Tsukada-Hamada thing.
Aside from the two noted, the performances were generally lackluster. Johnny’s West was tolerable, as was Hirano-Nagase. Tackey & Tsubasa’s “Dakinatsu” got dinged for being a repeat.
There were two dismal performances – SZ’s static stage and the elder juniors’ crowded stage. I don’t think I need to say anything more about either one.
All in all, this was a very weak Shounen Club from start to . . . well, I actually like the ending, so I won’t say from start to finish. There was very little that was truly impressive or noteworthy and plenty that seemed wrong, so I’m going to rate this one a 6 out of 10. They should have put more summer songs in.
Oh about FAUST, I was surprised too when seeing the images, because I only read Goethe’s FAUST and it seems quite different from what they are doing. // Fumi and Gocchi’ Faust is actually and adaptation from Tezuka Osamu’s Faust, but I thought it was the same story as Goethe. Seems it’s not. //
The witch part is more silliness than anything else, I think. When they have guest, if they are sitting on an aisle seat, they will be brought up on stage to be kissed ( or saved by Gocchi before they got kiss lol Shouri got saved. Hasshi got tricked haha by request from Fumi, their manager asked Tottsu to let Hasshi get that special seat )
As happy as I am with seeing Shoki and Juri handle a talk segment( not that I have any doubt about how good they are at speaking, especially with R no Housoku), I really think those SC news are too long. We didn’t really need one for KQJ PV, nor for Legend Story ( we have the makings for both), nor even for SZ concerts, which with the Documentaries/TV coverage/Sexy Zone Channel/ and other things I probably forgot, we got LOTS. And here too we don’t need.
I m still not sure about Shokura blog maybe I m just tired of the VTR ? SC news+ this ? …Since the Juniors are talking, I guess I m happy about it at least ? MatsuKai one was totally cute. Both the picture and his story. So there is that ( also, I m totally biaised, and I love baseball, and judging by their towels, they are supporting Giants 😛 probably in Tokyo Dome too, so I m even more happy haha)
Ooooh lol I was actually slightly moved during Brother, I don’t know I really find it quite powerful. Camera was really great here ( but for that one moment where we got a Reia/TakaKaito close up when they were just walking ? I don’t know, I felt that close up was weird at that moment)
Mmmm not sure we will see more of Kin Kan and Naniwa Oji I commented few months ago about that Takahashi Kaito/Ren/Sho performance and how Kansai Jrs fandom got angry at it for many reasons. Well, as I see it (and believe me, as a Kin Kan through and through I really do not want that) and because they are not presented as such in both magazines and on TV, Kin Kan and Naniwa don’t exist as units anymore (they re known as MaiJani members most of the time, but that’s just tide to the TV program) And I m pretty pessimist with how it will continue over SC. Mainly because TakaKai, Ren and Sho the 3 of them are announced among the main cast of Dream Boys. It’s of course Senga, Tama, and Miyacchi first, but they are announced just after, and have been in presscon etc. As so, SC will put them all together, I suppose or at least push for them, until at least:/ recording of September’s episodes…So until at least November, I would say we will mainly see all three of them, or at worst performance by them only. Side notes, we may get a VTR of Daigo, if they decide to do a Shokura news on SHOCK ( but I m not holding my hope high, because they have many other things). Ugh, I wish we could see the other boys too…
I m SO happy with Hasshi’s solo *–* We probably got it because of ABC-Z concerts, but I m really happy nonetheless. I really like the song, and I loved the performance
Shokura Youbin, Jesse was hilarious in it. I wish for less ( or no) Jesse talk in Gamushara, and a funny corner like this.
OMG that performance with all the juniors, lead by Jesse and Masuda Ryo…It seriously felt like ” OKAY, ALL THE POPULAR GUYS OVER 18YO (+ Shinta), GET A MIKE”
”Again, it’s a symptom of the fact that Johnny’s doesn’t know what to do with all these elder juniors. Or, more precisely, they’re deliberately not grouping them properly for some strange and unspecified reason. ” …I know rght ? I know they don’t want us to get attached to any groups because debuting always bring trouble and fans who are disappointed if not angry but…Either way I predict that fans WILL be angry. And there WILL be disappointement, because right now, I see it was too many Jrs being super popular and pushed to the front and as happy as I am to always see new faces and see Jrs getting hold of a mic etc and being on dramas etc I know that whoever they debut next year ( since Volleyball Cup is help next year they will debut at least one band. They ve been doing that since at least V6, I would say), people are going to be angry and disappointed. Why ? Because at the end of the day, too many won’t debut, and because they mix them so much, and it worked, for lots of them, people will be disappointed if who they like finally don’t debut together. At this point, I want to see Shoki debut with Bakaleya because he is so great with them and I love when he performs with Shinta and I need Kouchi to debut…. And Yasui should debut, why not with Hagi-chan since they are always together, and what about Hanzawa ? And what about JinguIwa ? I can keep going on endlessly lol
At the same time, they didn’t put together much the ”younger” generation ( they re not that much younger, but I m thinking JinguIwa, Kishi, Miyacchika etc) they barely get mixed with the older ones. I think only Haniuda was truly with the olders, at the end of the day, so if they put them with older Js, how will it be if they do it ( which they might actually, since I have more example in my mind of debuted Js with a notable age difference between older and youngest, than pretty much everyone almost same age like in Arashi). People will be angry, and disappointed, so I want groups lol At least it will be more clear on stage DX
I haven’t seen last week Shokura yet, so I didn’t mind TakkiTsuba song, but for the flowery costume lol Also, first time in…I can’t even remember how long…End of 2012 ? XD that Snow Man are on SC, all 6 of them. Fans were happy haha
Takahashi Kaito answer about unhabited island reminded me of that TV program Js West minus Ryusei who was filming, did and was on TV last august. It was a bit like that. (and at some point they did shaved ice 😛 Laughing here because of Faust and the ice shaving, and then Shinta speaking of that)
lol yep, I think someone did a pool live once, I think I heard about that, so maybe Hokuto found that cool and wanted to do it too
I m not a fan at all of Break out but that’s musically speaking. I can’t see myself listening to it on heavy rotation
lol Shige and Shori omake was adorable. They were laughing so much, probably as you pointed it because they are both prone to laugh very very easily especially when they are confortable. Shori spent 90% of 49 making laughing with the staffs, with the cameraman, with the Juniors, with the other actors, laughing all alone for seemingly no reason. The segment itself wasn’t really funny, since it was pretty much the same thing as TakkiTsuba talk, but because they were craking up before even beginning, and most of the time for no reason, it was really fun
Overall : I m right now tired of VTRs. Maybe even more as other shows like Maido Jyanni has began to put a bit too may VTR for my taste:/ I m tired because they bring nothing really important. The images they provide are images we already saw most of the time if not all the time ( and if suddenly someone watches it and think ” I want to go ! ” well, too late. The show already ended.).
”Now, I’d much rather see them get their own song to do, of course, but there’s a long line of juniors waiting for one of those ” haha indeed. Especially since officially, Aran and Miyacchika seems still to be in Travis Japan ( Miyacchika performed with them in PZ this summer, when he wasn’t last year and last winter, so it seems like he is also in it. Aran is also still in it it seems even if he wasn’t in Playzone because of his drama). To have that, we need stable group first anyway:/// like Kisumai,Question ? Snow Man, or ABC-Z.
I would like to see the song Taiga and Jesse composed and wrote together (they talked about it in Gamushara Js Party,12 July, I think, when Masuda Ryo was filming them and commenting on how lately they were always together talking. And they said it was because of that song.) I m really curious about it.
Right now, I like Js Party more than SC,in term of performance.
Otoko never gives up is awful. I loved the chorus a lot, but the first time I saw it really performed, I thought it was two different songs because the chorus and the verse just don’t match each other musically ( and overall, it s a disastrous everything. They did it waaaaay better here though lol than in Ongaku no hi … Genki Jesse rap, the no choregraphy, the not matching costume in both colours and styling. ) It s a terrible song in my opinion. Truly terrible.
But I m curious with how it will sell. Because of the MariSou situation ( which is the main reason I m curious ) which created such an averse reaction I had yet to see among from Js from the same band, publicly since the beginning ( I m thinking of the fanmeeting announcement and how 3nin acted ), Js fans and Js fandom ( since even Js fans from other fandoms talked about it and newspapers frontpage and TV entertainment news were only about that and contradictory statement about the situation from the agency), Pony Canyon email statement the day after which made fans way more furious and overall, and many other things from the agency directly which instead of calming fans, made them even more angry (or really sad) each passing day. 3nin fans were the most vocal actually ( since they even loudly booed the boys when they announced the 3nin single during their 3nin fanevent)
…But on one hand, JE put solo songs from the boys and the appeal of the Oricon 1st place for SZ + getting everything from your ichiban especially with solo songs they wrote ( Not sure NakaKen wrote his own) can make fan buy a lot + the fact that we knew of this single back in early July so since then, fans probably calmed down about it
On the other hand, the fact that they very recently pushed back the released to October ( when it was supposed to be few days after SZ 3rd anniversary which added insult to injury) is weird…JE backpedaled over the whole thing it seems, but they could have kept the date anyway, since they assured more than once that it would be only once. JE usually doesn’t push back a single unless there is a strong competition, and judging by Bye Bye Dubai sales, it should be worrisome on that day I think…
Promotion itself is a bit weird…3nin have all expressed more than once more or less directly and vocally both in TV programs/pressCon/Subsequent Concerts/JWEBs even before the single announcement when we only heard of the 3nin con in Kobe, how they prefered 5nin activities rather (for example, Shori promoted pretty much every single SZ next activities on his JWEB before we knew that the single was only 3 members, but said single and the 3nin concert in Kobe. He did talk of MariSou Gamushara though which were at the same time as Kobe Con, for example.)
And until NakaKen’s new JWEB last week, each of them mainly said in their JWEB to check their solo (and even that, it took a while for them to truly speak about their solo), but not directly to buy it or acquire it. ( Though I suppose JE will know push them to promote it more and more directly too).
On the other hand, MariSou have been promoting more and more the single…Mari said in his last JWEB that we should get it and announced the date change, in their dual radioprogram ( SZ one, QrZone) MariSou both talked at the end of it, how much of a super cool and great awesome song it is, and we should definitely get it and Mari even sang the chorus….Which is in my opinion, really awkward because they are not on it, and we all know it. It s to make their fans especially buy it, I think, but still…
Anyway, I spoke a bit too much lol. Sorry
Thank you for the review
Yeah – Faust threw me off. Why call it Faust if it isn’t Faust?
I totally missed everything to do with the witch part – thanks for the clarification.
Since juniors are doing the Shokura News segment, I don’t mind it even though it isn’t necessary – after all, we get too little participation from them anyway, and for people other than Shoki-kun and Juri-kun, it will be good practice. Still, I agree with you that the segment is too long. Definitely, we don’t need them covering the activities of the debuted groups who already have a part in Shounen Club. Junior stuff, and things that aren’t as heavily promoted would be good. I’d like to see them interviewing their dai-senpai (SMAP, V6, TOKIO, KinKi Kids, Arashi, as well as Kanjani8 and NEWS).
In general, VTR segments are tedious, but again, it seems to be the only way we get to hear from juniors these days. The agency doesn’t seem to trust them to talk live.
Having two people perform “Brother” is definitely good and potentially poignant. I think there was a rendition of “Brother” in J’s Party where they had too many people and I noted that this one had a better impact.
On Kin Kan and Naniwa Oji, I will confess that the situation does not look good and the fandom was apparently ahead of the game on this one (though they still tend to overreact). The possibility of Sho/Ren/Kaito as a unit still seems unlikely to me because such a group has serious gaps, but Johnny’s has done unlikely and outright silly things before, so I wouldn’t put it past the agency. But I think there’s still room for fans to have a say and to push for Kin Kan and Naniwa Oji. The agency has backtracked on stuff like this before, and once we clear Dream Boys, maybe we’ll see more of the other guys.
Hashimoto-kun’s solos are just always great.
Having a funny skit corner in J’s Party with Jesse-kun at the center of it would be a huge improvement.
On the massive elder junior performance, isn’t it interesting that Shintaro-kun is always treated like one of them even though he’s much younger? Such a veteran – and built like a tank.
Even if Johnny’s doesn’t form groups, the fans are constantly favoring certain combinations (even I do – heck, I thought that was what Shounen Club was all about!), so I agree that there’s no way to mitigate disappointment. And it’s not like the agency doesn’t form groups – it just spends all of its time rearranging Sexy Boyz and trying to figure out new ways to use the word Sexy to name groups, but all of that is focused on the younger boys instead of the elder juniors. Here’s a thought: form a group called Sexy Boyz out of juniors who are eighteen or over! That way, I won’t squirm as much in response to the name of the group (it’s still a ridiculous name, but at least all the people involved have a vague chance of being sexy).
We all know that the elder juniors are not up for the running on the Volleyball debut next year. What are the chances that Johnny’s wants to once again set the record for the youngest group ever? That’s why I’m pushing for the elder juniors here – I’m very much afraid that they’re getting time (like on J’s Party), but not a clear future.
So, here’s my (current) list of groups I want to see debut (as part of the Shounen Club game) in priority order:
1. Bakaleya + Shoki
2. Yasui, Hagiya, Ogawa Yuu, Kobayashi Mizuki, Hanzawa, and Masuda.
3. Jinguji, Iwahashi, Aran, Kishi, and whoever else Johnny’s wants to be part of the Volleyball supporters – possibly Matsuda Genta and Matsukura Kaito.
So, group three is my Volleyball supporter candidate. I think Miyachika Kaito-kun should lead a different group – he would be overshadowed by the others in group three, and he’s too talented for that. I haven’t really been rooting for Noon Boyz or Snow Man so I hesitate to opine on them, but I think that they should just proceed together as they more or less have been – probably more as a dancing/stage acting focused unit.
Am I going to be angry if I’m wrong (especially about Bakaleya or Jingu-Iwa)? Probably for about a month. But I was extremely unhappy with the break-up of B.I.Shadow, and that hasn’t prevented me from enjoying Sexy Zone’s work.
Yeah, I figured Takahashi Kaito-kun got it from some TV program – this is sort of a summer TV thing.
Good to know we’re more or less on the same page with “Break Out!” (though I’m harsher).
I still haven’t watched the 49 making yet – I have it and want to, but just haven’t found the time. Laughing is good.
Maido Jani has been doing VTR stuff? I haven’t been keeping up, and the members all seemed to be good talkers, so I’m surprised that they’re turning more to VTRs. As you know, I hate VTRs – it’s why I decided to not follow some of the Arashi solo shows (Nino-san, Kono Kao, and I eventually dumped Aiba Manabu because the VTRs were going overboard). It’s better if they just let the talents explain stuff – even if that explanation is not as slick as the VTR treatment.
The agency doesn’t really seem to want to do anything serious with the five-member version of Travis Japan – they sure don’t get the Shounen Club time as a group. Even though the grouping has been very stable, I don’t see it going anywhere – not with the agency handling it this way.
We got some Taiga-Jesse stuff in the August J’s Party episodes, but I don’t think it was the song they wrote together. Maybe a warm-up. Speaking of that, though, I wish they added the song credits to J’s Party the way they do in Shounen Club.
From the little I’ve seen of it, I agree – “Otoko Never Gives Up” is not good. Nothing new for a SZ single, though – musical mish-mash. They didn’t do it in this episode, though, did they? They did “Matta Nante Nash!”
Well, I’m certainly not going to support this single. I like the group as a five-member group, I don’t have any ichiban (obviously), and I wouldn’t mind them losing the #1 because of this silly move – it would send a firm message. I’m still unhappy, and I’m not even a particularly big fan.
I still think the agency is just trying to get fans riled up to create buzz, but we’ll only see that on the next 5-nin single.
