Beginners! Ep 10 Review

Well, this is it – the last episode of Beginners! (ビギナーズ! ). Doesn’t seem like it should be, does it? I mean, they haven’t developed the promising storyline of Shimura’s father’s disgrace at all. Shimura (Fujigaya Taisuke) could have spent two or three episodes getting to the bottom of what happened all those years ago, doing some investigative work and using his S-class team to bust those really responsible. Don’t tell me they’re going to pack that all into one episode?!

At the end of the last episode, the academy chief (Kaga Takeshi) found a way to sideline Shimura – making him part of the Police Athletic League instead of an active-duty police officer. If Shimura wins a marathon, he’ll be in the league.

Shimura lamely accepted this fate in an extremely uncharacteristic turn for him. Again, I wonder what happened to the fiery fellow we met at the beginning of the series, and can’t really call it character development, since he’s definitely gone downhill. Yes, he’s more serious, but in a bad way.

The rest of the class is distraught at his choice, as are Sakuraba (Sugimoto Tetta) and Ryuzaki (Ishida Hikari).

Beginners! Ep 09 Review

At the end of episode 8, Shimura (Fujigaya Taisuke) learned what viewers already knew – that his father had not been responsible for the shooting that destroyed his career as a police officer. After years of having a low opinion of his father, Shimura is now full of doubts and questions – especially about who was really to blame.

Hiro (Gouriki Ayame) learned something completely different. Chiaki (Okamoto Azusa) told her that Shimura had turned her down, saying that he had someone else he liked. Of course, that someone else is Hiro.

Training continues, but when Ryuzaki (Ishida Hikari) tries to call them all in, Shimura continues to run. Apparently, he’s burning off some steam, and instructor Sakuraba (Sugimoto Tetta) lets him, understanding the source of the frustration.

Beginners! Ep 08 Review

Well, S class won the tournament and weren’t all forced to resign in the last episode (I trust that didn’t come as too much of a surprise). Presumably, that means they’re no longer substitutes, so why is Shimura (Fujigaya Taisuke) looking so depressed?

His classmates wonder about it as well, and it seems like it’s been going on for a while.

Overhearing their talk about him, Shimura approaches them like a zombie/mutant, quickly corners them and moves in for the kill . . .

Beginners! Ep 07 Review

In the previous episode of Beginners! (ビギナーズ! ), we saw all sorts of developments. The writers filled out Shimura (Fujigaya Taisuke)’s back-story out a bit, though not completely. Tachibana (Kitayama Hiromitsu)’s visit to his friend put a smile on his face, and it looks as if a weight has been lifted off of his heart. A kiss suggested that the hearts of Shimura and Hiro (Gouriki Ayame) might be coming closer together, but where does that leave Chiaki (Okamoto Azusa), who confessed to Hiro that she liked Shimura?

Episode 6 was a slow episode, but one that put a lot of pieces into play. This time, I’m hoping for some movement from those pieces – some action.

The show begins with Shimura deliberately taking a distant seat to avoid sitting right across from Hiro. A bit too obvious, isn’t it?

Beginners! Ep 06 Review

In the last episode of Beginners! (ビギナーズ! ), the show took a serious turn, and it was excellent. Will the drama continue to go strong?

Beginners Title

It begins on a promising note. Class S instructor Sakuraba (Sugimoto Tetta) said at the end of episode 5 that he would really train them from here on (instead of leaving everything to his assistant Ryuzaki – played by Ishida Hikari), and we see that happening in the first scene:

While the rest of S class is totally fried, Shimura (Fujigaya Taisuke) and Tachibana (Kitayama Hiromitsu) refuse to give each other the upper hand by quitting first.

Though their stricter training regimen seems to have strengthened the bonds within S class, so that even Tachibana is willing to complement the others . . .
