MONSTERS Ep 07 Review

It’s been a long gap between my review of the previous episode of MONSTERS and this one, but I hadn’t given up on it. I was just holding out for subtitles (and thanks goes to LuffyNoTomo at D-Addicts for the subs, and for sticking with this series) since there was no way I could review this episode without them.

At the beginning of the episode, we see unorthodox detective Hiratsuka (Katori Shingo) testifying before a court. Have they finally decided to haul him in?

No, it’s about another case. Saionji (Yamashita Tomohisa) will explain for the benefit of the viewer in a moment, but for now, we wonder whether anyone would be silly enough to rely on Hiratsuka’s testimony. Hopefully it’s not essential to the case.

MONSTERS Ep 07 002

Saionji narrates how Hiratsuka came to be a witness to the crime. It all started one month before with a journalist named Nikaido . . .

MONSTERS Ep 06 Review

In the review for the fifth episode of MONSTERS, I pointed out that all the cases except for the first have centered on two individuals competing against each other in a professional setting, and a possible third character who is their boss. The similarity between the cases didn’t stop there. They tended to involve a time trick and a murder location trick to create a false alibi. In every case, it was pretty clear who the culprit was and what the motive was, and the only question left was method.

With the cases having such a similar structure and resolution, I could only conclude laziness on the part of the writers. They’ve basically come up with one mystery with blanks for the names and occupations, and have spent all the past episodes photocopying the template and filling in the blanks.

So, will this episode be the same way or will the writers finally get their act together?

The show begins with Saionji (Yamashita Tomohisa) getting rejected by his girlfriend Emi (Yanagihara Kanako) because she wants him to focus on his work and get his dream job before they get married.

MONSTERS Ep 06 000

The news gets worse, though, as Saionji’s progress has been too slow for the taste of the chief, so he’s getting sent back to his old peripheral post in Koishikawa.

He writes a goodbye letter to Hiratsuka – clearly depressed by this fate, but not blaming Hiratsuka for it.

MONSTERS Ep 05 Review

Monsters is a comedic mystery series starring Katori Shingo-san and Yamashita Tomohisa-kun as police detectives. Young detective Saionji Kousuke (Yamashita) has to keep tabs on the more eccentric Hiratsuka Heihachi (Katori), and find evidence of Hiratsuka’s wrongdoing while Hiratsuka uses methods both ethical and otherwise to solve cases.

We begin with Saionji’s girlfriend (played by Yanagihara Kanako) seeing an interaction between Saionji and another woman and apparently misinterpreting it.

Monsters Ep 05 000

Saionji notices, and decides that the best way to make it up to her is to propose that they get married. To ensure the success of this plan, he tries to book a particular table that reputedly brings that kind of fortune.

Monsters Ep 05 001

Unfortunately, when trying to make the arrangements, he finds out that the places is all booked up – he’ll have to wait for someone to cancel.

In the lobby, people are preparing for a major cooking competition between traditional chef Maruoka Ryuujiro and experimental chef Shijo Atsuhiko.

The number one single last week was “MONSTERS” from The MONSTERS – a temporary team of SMAP‘s Katori Shingo-san and solo Johnny’s member Yamashita Tomohisa-kun put together for their drama of the same name. The single sold 160,139 in its first week, which was certainly stronger than I expected (looking for 120k-150k), and also above what you’d expect given the weakness in the drama’s ratings.

Kobukuro‘s “Kami Hikouki” (紙飛行機 – paper airplane) took the number two spot, selling 40,068. Kobukuro’s fans are strongly tilted towards album-buying, so the sales figures for their singles don’t really reflect much.

Boyfriend was at #3 with “Kimi to Dance Dance Dance” selling 37,800. FTISLAND was right behind, with 35,260 copies of “Polar Star” sold.

Watanabe Mayu-san’s “Hikaru monotachi” broke gold in its second week, adding a strong 16,498 at #8 for a total of 108,405.

Momoiro Clover Z was right behind at #9, as “Saraba, Itoshiki Kanashimi yo” sold 14,038 in its second week, bring its total to 87,783.

Kis-My-Ft2 took #15 with “Ai no Beat” adding 7,743 in its third week, making the running total 287,105.

MONSTERS Ep 04 Review

Young detective Saionji Kousuke (Yamashita) has to keep tabs on the more eccentric Hiratsuka Heihachi (Katori), and find evidence of Hiratsuka’s wrongdoing. This episode begins in a hospital, where a man named Ando is being told that he will not get the position he had aimed for.

It will instead go to Murakawa . . .

MONSTERS Ep 04 001

. . . and Ando is visibly displeased. But is it enough to commit murder over? Well, that’s not all – his boss has heard bad rumors about him, and plans to have him hauled before an inquest. That’s more like it.
