While there are some notable Johnny’s releases in April, the release list looks quite a bit thinner than it was in March, so I guess the release flood is abating. Still, there’s plenty to talk about for Johnny’s fans – headline groups SMAP and Arashi both have singles, Johnny’s West has their début single with no way to predict the results there, and the potential sales for Nakayama Yuma-kun’s new single are similarly difficult to guess.

This list has selected single and album releases for the month, not all of them (i.e. releases from groups that I’m interested in tracking or at least recognize). I know I must have missed important ones, so please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.

More complete listings are available on merchant websites (I use CD Japan’s list).

The release schedule really picks up going into February, and the floodgates fully open by the 19th. While the most of the top spots are probably going to the obvious names, seeing as how Arashi, AKB48, and other marquee groups are in the mix, there’s going to be plenty of depth to the charts soon. No more of these lingering singles filling up the top 30.

With the sudden explosion of releases to keep track of, I know I must have missed important ones, so please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.

The past week’s number one single was “Melon Juice” (メロンジュース) from HKT48, which took platinum in its first week convincingly by selling 268,897 copies.

Tohoshinki‘s “SCREAM” took #2 with 134,304 copies sold – roughly within expectations for them.

At a distant #3, “Koi Oto to Amazora” from AAA sold 37,795.

In its third week, AKB48’s “Koisuru Fortune Cookie” sold 22,654 copies at #5 to bring its total to 1,410,395.

Taking #9, EXILE’s “EXILE PRIDE ~Konna Sekai wo Koisuru Tame” . . . is still here. Seventeen weeks in, it sold an additional 14,963 to push its total to 774,090, continuing its bid to grab a lofty spot in the year-end ranking through . . . somewhat devious means.

“Peace & Hi-lite” from Southern All Stars got #11 this week, bringing its five-week total to 316,401.

The second week of sales for Morning Musume‘s “Wagamama Ki no mama Ai no Joke/Ai no Gundan” saw it at #12 with a reasonable 12,340 copies sold. It’s new total is 156,401.

Hikawa Kiyoshi-san’s “Manten no Hitomi” took #14, adding 8,780 in its second week to get its total to 53,977.

SHINee got #15 with the third week of sales of “Boys Meet U” bringing its total to 116,099.

The top single in the past week was Morning Musume‘s “Wagamama Ki no mama Ai no Joke/Ai no Gundan” (わがまま 気のまま 愛のジョーク/愛の軍団), which managed an incredibly strong 144,061 copies sold. This is the best first week result for a Morning Musume single since “Do It! Now” in 2002. Could Morning Musume be on the verge of a second golden age?

The second week sales for AKB48’s “Koisuru Fortune Cookie” were enough to get it to #2, but otherwise, it was only 4.3% of first week sales – 57,309 for a total of 1,387,741. That’s not atypical for the group, but someday I’d like to see them do a song that captures broad appeal beyond their dedicated fanbase – a situation which would be demonstrated by strong second week sales.

B1A4’s “Nande? Doushite?” came in at #3, selling 47,646.

Hikawa Kiyoshi-san was right on their tail at #4, with 45,197 copies of “Manten no Hitomi” sold.

At #5, “Boys Meet U” from SHINee has a remarkably good second week, selling 19,786 to bring its total above 100k to 108,523.

EXILE’s “EXILE PRIDE ~Konna Sekai wo Koisuru tame” popped back into the rankings in its sixteenth week (I think). It came in at #6 with 17,594 fresh copies sold to get its total above 750k to 759,227. This was the single with the dubious accounting, so perhaps an asterisk next to that triple platinum is warranted.

In its fourth week, “Peace & Hi-lite” from Southern All Stars is still going strong. It’s at #8 with 14,228 copies sold for a grand total of 303,679.

After an August where we had a lack of strong album releases (especially late in the month), September seems to be full of new albums. On the downside, I don’t see anything I’m particularly excited about.

This list has selected single and album releases for the month, not all of them (i.e. releases from groups that I’m interested in tracking). My apologies if I missed a significant release  – please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.
