The previous Shounen Club (ザ少年倶楽部) ended with Sexy Zone, and this episode begins with them singing “4 Seasons”. On the bright side, the song is new to Shounen Club, so the freshness factor is there.

But why aren’t Marius Yo-kun and Matsushima Sou-kun performing with the elder three?

The choreography was trivial, this is a fairly simple song to sing, and it’s not a particularly upbeat opening song – it would have done better in the middle of the show rather than the start.

The reason they didn’t save it for later was apparently because the song’s title is the episode’s theme. It’s certainly not the most upbeat Johnny’s song to mention the four seasons, though. Hosts Kiriyama Akito-kun and Kawai Fumito-kun talked to the three SZ members about it . . .

I took a lengthy pause from reviewing old Johnnys’ Jr Land episodes because I realized I had too many holes in my collection, especially since the series ended and reviewing the entire run from April 2012 onward became possible. I recently found where all the episodes were hiding (thanks hakucchan!), so now I’ll continue to take a look at what the juniors were up to. It is bound to be the case that, as some of these juniors eventually get to debut, JJL will become a major touchstone to see how they developed into stars.

This was a special episode of Johnnys’ Jr. Land composed only of the Jr. Dream Live performances from previous episodes, as requested by fans. Imagine Shounen Club with a smaller stage, no live audience, no talk segments, no Hey! Say! Jump, and mainly performances from juniors and Sexy Zone (and one from A.B.C-Z), and that’s basically what this episode was. Let’s see how the juniors were doing a year ago and how far they’ve come since then.

The wonderful Mogi Junichi-san goes from MC to DJ in this episode:

Performance one was Sexy Zone performing their self-titled début single. This was from the seventh episode (2011-11-13), and let’s say it right away since it was my main reaction throughout all of this: wow, they’ve changed a lot in two years! Here’s a fresh-faced Fuma for you:

Shounen Club 2013.12.11 Review

Just a heads-up: this is not the final Shounen Club (ザ少年倶楽部) of the year. There will be a Christmas special on December 18th, so look forward to that!

This episode began with a “2013 medley” introduced by Noon Boyz, who I continue to think are being groomed as the future hosts of the show.

The first song in the medley was “Real Sexy!” performed by Sexy Zone. I guess the medley is going to involve singles released in 2013.

A.B.C-Z continued the medley with “Walking On Clouds”.

Nakayama Yuma-kun sang “Darkness”.

Shounen Club 2013.09.04 Review

For some reason I thought that this Shounen Club (ザ少年倶楽部) was going to be a Kansai edition, but that’s clearly wrong – we’re still in the Kanto region for this month. The show begins with an English introduction from Jesse-kun. I don’t remember hearing him speak so much English at once, and it was good (except the ‘yeah’ at the end came out a bit awkward). Hopefully he’ll get more chance to practice.

The opening performance featured Sexy Zone’s Sato Shori-kun, Kikuchi Fuma-kun and Matsushima Sou-kun performing “Kimi no Tame, Boku ga Iru”. Interesting to see Sou-kun stepping in for Kento-kun – I guess Kento-kun was busy with something else. Sou-kun seems to be growing well (I make it sound like he’s a plant . . . ).

Also on stage were a whole host of other juniors including Bakaleya4, Noon Boyz, Jinguji-kun, Iwahashi-kun, and what seemed to be Twenty Twenty – at least, a lot of the members from that informal (and I guess soon to be formalized now that Tokyo has won the 2020 Olympics!) group.

Due perhaps to Hey! Say! Jump promoting their new single or other commitments I’m not aware of, this episode of Shounen Club (ザ少年倶楽部) featured the members of Sexy Zone as the main hosts of the show with A.B.C-Z handling their usual segments. It’s not my preferred arrangement, but let’s see how they do.

I always like it when one of the members start in the midst of the crowd – don’t ask me why.

The opening song was one I haven’t heard on Shounen Club in a while, but always liked – Tackey & Tsubasa’s “Yume Monogatari”. Jesse-kun and Hokuto-kun were at center stage, but flanked by Masuda Ryo-kun and his cadre of Elder Juniors.

Finally daring to look at the new season of dramas, it looks like both of the ones I’ll definitely cover – Kamen Teacher and Pin to Kona – have Jesse-kun in them. So . . . this is going to be quite a season for him. It therefore didn’t surprise me too much when Hokuto-kun left the stage during the next song – V6’s “Honey Beat”, so that Jesse-kun was firmly in center stage with Noon Boyz and the Elder Juniors backing him up. Let’s see what he does with the spotlight this season.
