I accidentally missed the June list – that’s the trouble with having a monthly post when everything else is weekly. Anyway, I’ve compiled the list for July, and it looks like activity is picking up into the summer. July 2nd in particular seems like a popular day for album releases.

This list has selected single and album releases for the month, not all of them (i.e. releases from groups that I’m interested in tracking or at least recognize). I know I must have missed important ones, so please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.

More complete listings are available on merchant websites (I use CD Japan’s list).

The top single of the past week was Kanjani8’s “King of Otoko!”, which became the group’s most successful single by selling 352,888 copies – narrowly beating the first week of the group’s previous best – “Musekinin Hero”. That’s quite a comeback after a pair of soft singles.

Arashi’s “Bittersweet” took number two, selling 42,896 copies to bring its two-week total to 554,592. That’s lower than what I’d usually expect for an Arashi single’s second week, and this one didn’t knock it out of the ballpark in the first week. On the other hand, it’s better than what we saw on “Endless Game”,  so I think we’re just looking at average results here.

At #3, “Aoi Ryu” (青い龍) from EXILE ATSUSHI sold 35,085 copies.

“Otona nano yo!” from Berryz Koubou took #4 by selling 30,229.

Kobukuro’s “Ima, Sakihokoru Hana Tachi Yo” sold 19,277 at #7.

Kanjani8’s new single has had significant coattail affects on their previous two singles – the ones that didn’t do so well. I don’t know if this is event-driven or whether people just didn’t know about “Hibiki” and “Kokoro Sora Moyou” until they went to the store to buy “King of Otoko!”. Anyway, “Hibiki” took #9 in its sixth week, selling 16,140 to finally get above the platinum mark with 257,223 sold in total. “Kokoro Sora Moyou” got #11 with 13,150 sold in its twelfth week to push its total to 254,981. In other words, Kanjani8 saw three of their singles crack platinum in the Oricon standings in the same week. That has to be some kind of strange record/coincidence, right?

The real flood of big releases starts next week, but the standings were flooded with lesser known names this week taking an opportunity to vie for a good ranking, effectively clearing out most of the lingerers from 2013.

The number one single for the past week was a big one, though – Morning Musume’s “Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou sa/Kimi no Kawari wa Iyashinai/What is LOVE?” had the group’s best opening week since “Do It! Now” in 2002 (a claim also made by the group’s previous single until this one surpassed it). It saw 149,361 copies sold, continuing the recovery after the group’s dry period between 2005 and 2012.

Hikawa Kiyoshi-san’s new single “Otone Nagare Tsuki” (大利根ながれ月) did well at #2, selling 46,312.

At #3, Amuro Namie-san’s “TSUKI” sold 42,021 copies.

“Kimi no Tonari” from aiko-san took #5, selling 36,654.

Taking #9, Ieiri Leo-san’s “Chocolate” saw 18,047 copies sold.

In its second week, “Snow Magic Fantasy” from SEKAI NO OWARI got #11 by selling a very strong 16,237 copies to bring its total to 116,278.

Kanjani8 got #15 as “Hibiki” had 7,472 copies sold to bring its three-week total to 234,987.

The release schedule really picks up going into February, and the floodgates fully open by the 19th. While the most of the top spots are probably going to the obvious names, seeing as how Arashi, AKB48, and other marquee groups are in the mix, there’s going to be plenty of depth to the charts soon. No more of these lingering singles filling up the top 30.

This list has selected single and album releases for the month, not all of them (i.e. releases from groups that I’m interested in tracking or at least recognize). With the sudden explosion of releases to keep track of, I know I must have missed important ones, so please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.

As usual, January starts off as a practical no-man’s land of releases, except that Golden Bomber seems to be starting a tradition of releasing on New Year’s Day, and Sandaime J Soul Brothers is joining them this time. It so happens that Jan. 1st is Wednesday – the standard release day – this year, so they won’t be facing a shortened first week of sales. Otherwise, with only a couple notable exceptions, it’s pretty dry until January 22nd, where we start to see a more normal number of releases. For the first few weeks, there seem to be an inordinate number of collections.

This list has selected single and album releases for the month, not all of them (i.e. releases from groups that I’m interested in tracking or at least recognize). My apologies if I missed a significant release  – please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.
