Gamushara J’s Party!! (ガムシャラ J’s Party!!) is a music variety show that features on-stage performances from Johnny’s juniors, the idol trainees of the Johnny’s Entertainment agency, as well as some backstage footage to show all sides of the experience. It is associated with another TV Asahi show called Gamushara, in which the same juniors featured in J’s Party also take on a variety of challenges.

My main hope going into the June episodes was that we see a wider selection of juniors than we saw in May. The opening credits highlighted Jesse, Hanzawa Akatsuki, Masuda Ryo, Miyachika Kaito, Nakamura Reia, Takahashi Kaito, Matsuda Genta, Suzuki Shunei, Haniuda Amu, and Kishi Yuta. So . . . that’s exactly the same number of juniors as we saw in May – ten. Is this going to be a pattern with this show, that we only see ten juniors each month? If so, I guess it could work out as long as they keep rotating most of them. And here, between May and June, I think Jesse-kun is the only person in J’s Party for both months.

The show begins with an overture and the dramatic entrance of the three headliners – Jesse, Hanzawa, and Masuda – singing Kis-My-Ft2’s “Everybody Go”.

The rest of the cast of ten soon join them, but except for Kishi-kun, the rest act as backdancers. It’s interesting to see Jesse-Hanzawa-Masuda since they’re a vocally adept trio, but even more interesting to hear Kishi-kun in the mix and getting solo lines in their company. Kishi-kun’s voice provides a contrast to those of the other three.

In my continuing reviews of Gamushara J’s Party!! (ガムシャラ J’s Party!!), I’m going to skip discussing parts that are just filler – like the very long intro of the show, VTRs of Gamushara that don’t include new material, and the clips in the first episode of each month that are really teasers for the second episode, but take a substantial portion of the show.

So, let’s jump right into the action with Jesse-kun singing “Misty”:

Indeed, it was very much like we were starting to watch a concert already in progress, as the first thing we saw was other people clearing the stage for him.

After last week’s more boisterous episode (Bad Boys and all that), I’m wondering if we’re going to get a calmer one this time. It’s sure starting out that way. This is an extremely odd song to start on, and I’m going to call the director/organizers out for being sloppy with this – they should have planned for the guys to do something to kick off the second episode during the recording of this, but apparently that slipped their minds. I guess they just hope that the juniors do something that will work as the first song of an episode around halfway into the concert?

This episode of J’s Party begins with a little feature about Gamushara, explaining the two programs . . .

. . . before J’s Party begins in earnest. The May episodes were recorded in March, and that’s somewhat important because we’ve already seen some shuffling within the ranks of the juniors in the April Shounen Clubs.

The juniors featured in this episode each got their own special graphic at the start, so let me just list them here in the order they were credited: Matsumura Hokuto, Yasui Kentaro, Morimoto Shintaro, Tanaka Juri, Morohoshi Shoki, Okamoto Kauan, Hagiya Keigo, Sanada Yuma, Nozawa Yuki, and Jesse. On the bright side, most of those names are juniors who weren’t in the April episodes, so that’s good. However, if those are the only performers, the selection is also much narrower than we saw in the April episodes – I was sort of hoping that with Sexy Zone not appearing in the May episodes, their place would be taken by more juniors, but instead we’re probably looking at fewer juniors, each getting more time.

Okay, so thanks to a very helpful explanation from daiyamondo223, I now understand what’s going on with these new TV Asahi shows. There are two shows with the word “Gamushara” in their title. This one, Gamushara J’s Party!! (ガムシャラ J’s Party!!), airs on a premium channel in the late afternoon on the first two Saturdays of every month and it is basically like getting a junior concert DVD (or Blu-ray, if you’re watching the HD version) every month with backstage footage built-in. At least, that’s how I see it. In articles, I’m just going to refer to this one as “J’s Party”. The other show airs in late late night – technically on Sunday even though its listed for Saturday – and is simply called “Gamushara”. That’s the one with the challenges, and I’ll give its date as Sunday (so for the first episode I’ll date it April 13th) to try to distinguish between the two shows as much as possible. So, to recap, J’s Party is sort of like Shounen Club, and Gamushara is sort of like Johnny’s Jr. Land. Except they’re not.

Gamushara looks like this:

And J’s Party – this show – looks like this:

After the intro (the same two-minute sequence that started episode 1), Jesse-kun took the stage to lead the juniors in “Mirai no Saiten” – the same song from Johnny’s 2020 World that I skewered when they did it on SC. Fortunately, they didn’t have English lyrics at the bottom of the screen as they did on SC, so at least I could try to pretend it was a language I didn’t know (Dutch works – it has a lot of similar-sounding words to English, but isn’t mutually intelligible).

WordPress was good enough to remind me that today marks the second anniversary of this site and, to celebrate two years in service, I’m happy to bring word of a brand new and exciting show – Gamushara J’s Party!! (ガムシャラ J’s Party!!).

The first news about Gamushara came out in January, but that was about a series of live events featuring Johnny’s juniors – aspiring male Japanese idols (singer-dancer-actors) in the Johnny’s Entertainment agency. More recently, we got word that it was going to be turned into a TV series – a likely thing anyway, since the live events were put on by TV Asahi. Despite all that, I still had the impression that we were going to get something like Johnny’s Jr Land (JJL), the previous show featuring juniors, because the official description of the show said that the juniors would be taking on challenges, just like they did in JJL. A quick scan of this episode, though, revealed something more like two specials that aired over the past year or so – the Reality of Johnny’s Jr and Top of the Pops – than JJL. In fact, this episode looked more like the documentary/extras disc of a concert DVD.

TV Asahi starts the show off by mentioning its long history with the Johnny’s organization . . . .

. . . then we get a glimpse at the set where I thought we’d see most of Gamushara’s action. Yasui Kentaro-kun did the intro and there were quick clips of the juniors doing silly things.

Then we turned to some quick backstage scenes with the announcer’s voice over. None of it made clear what we could expect from the show, though at the very least they promised rehearsal and backroom footage.

The main body of the show begins at the Ex Theater Roppongi on February 1st, with the cast of juniors walking in, dressed in civvies.
