The members of Kis-My-Ft2 face a particularly daunting scenario in this episode of Kis-My-BUSAIKU (キスマイ ブサイク). With guests Taka and Toshi commenting, they had to show how they would deal with their girlfriends finding out about their porn collection.

A commenter had mentioned this as an upcoming topic when I was despairing about the lack of variety in topics, and in response I said it could be pretty interesting to watch depending on the actress the members have to explain themselves to. Well . . . they sort of robbed the situation of that really interesting confrontation by having the boys send an e-mail explaining themselves instead.

So while there’s going to be awkwardness, it won’t be quite as embarrassing for the members. That’s at the same time disappointing and understandable. On the bright side, it’s relatively easy to translate (in general – I’m not confident enough to attempt to do so myself on such a sensitive subject), since their messages will be completely written out on the screen. On the downside, it also means the main segment will be very short, since they’re not actually playing out a scene.

Normally, if they were acting out a scene, I’d feature screenshots and primarily analyze their body language. In this case, though, all the members look exactly the same – they’re all seated and typing away at on their phones – and I don’t have enough linguistic confidence to judge their choice of words in Japanese. So, I’ll just present one screencap of each member for completeness’ sake (in alphabetical order as usual) and leave it at that:

Because we were finally breaking away from romantic situations, the rankings this time had some significant differences from episodes past. Apologies are a tricky business, and I guess we found out which members had more experience being apologetic and knowing what works to mollify those who are angry.

Honestly, though, I couldn’t tell exactly why each message earned the position it did – my Japanese simply isn’t good enough for that. I think that the ones that stayed playful did badly, while those that ended on a serious, sincere note (even if they started playful) did well. The losing one was serious but too brief, and tried to deny responsibility, I think.

There was at least one epic celebration from a member in this episode, but I won’t give away who it was or what position they were happy to get.

Because the main segment was shorter than usual, they had almost half the episode for a new corner – “BUSAIKU!? Mail”. This featured strange text messages contributed by viewers. I think these were autocorrect fails (as we all should know, autocorrect does more harm than good), but I’m not sure. It could have also been typos which, in Japanese, can produce totally different kanji (in contrast to English, where typos often retain most of the intended meaning).

Fujigaya-kun shared a mail story regarding Takizawa-kun and Kamenashi-kun, but I didn’t understand the details.

To round out the episode, they had the usual audition for guys cooler than Kis-My-Ft2. The first candidate wasn’t really worthy, but I was surprised by how harsh the members were to the second candidate.

First of all, I appreciated the change in scenario away from kissing scenes, and I think some of the members did, too. I understand why they did this situation the way they did – over e-mail – but I would have been even more impressed if they had been gutsy enough to play the scene with their girlfriend face-to-face.

The new segment was a real plus. I hope they keep throwing in other BUSAIKU stuff – the logical equivalent of a list of epic fails. It shouldn’t just be the Kis-My-Ft2 guys embarrassing themselves the entire time to produce comedy for the show.

The Kisumai Yori Kakkoii corner at the end needs some work. I don’t understand why the video quality from the submissions is so fuzzy when practically every camera on the planet records at DVD quality or better. For now, it’s an okay filler, but there are plenty of ways they could improve the concept. For instance, maybe if a submitter got more than five “kakkoii”s from the members, they would be invited on the show for a minute of fame where they could introduce themselves.

It sure looks like they want this to be a full hour show. They definitely record two episodes at the same time, with the same guests, and are set up to do it as an hour-long instead of half-hour show. If they got the extra time, I bet they’d be able to include a whole range of other segments that the half-hour format doesn’t allow for right now.
