Since the last episode of “A.B.C-Z オーストラリア縦断 資金0円 ワーホリの旅” (A.B.C-Z’s working holiday trip through Australia with 0 yen) left the guys with only a bit of spare change, they need to spend this time looking for work.

They seem pretty relaxed as they drive into Gold Coast (again going “umi da!” – “it’s the sea!” – as if that’s a surprise at a place called ‘Gold Coast’).

They even spend a bit of the morning at the beach, though Tsukada-kun seems to be the only one willing to spend time in the water. Thankfully, they eventually pull themselves away from the water to search for work.

Walking around, they spot a place filled with Japanese writing – clearly meant to cater to Japanese tourists.

They’re pretty rough in the way they ask for work in English, but why they didn’t think to use Japanese right away in this store is beyond me. With Japanese written all over the place, they should have figured using their native tongue was going to work. Perhaps they just wanted to show what English they could manage, in case the work involved dealing with English-speakers.

There’s some initial hope, but the guy in charge has no work to offer, giving them a tip of where to try but nothing more. He might have been spooked by the camera crew.

Continuing on their way, they find a NaviTour and check the postings.

Once again, it’s Totsuka-kun who handles the phone calls, trying a number of places. With one, the English was rough but it seemed to meet with partial success. For another, the person at the other end asked if they spoke Japanese – it was a Japanese Restaurant in need of two people in the evening.

At the Japanese Restaurant, they ask if there’s any chance for work for the five of them, and the woman there calls a golf course on their behalf and arranges the work for them.

One might think that a country club like this will yield them the best pay they’ve seen yet – after all, the place could afford it – but that would neglect how country club members got where they are in the first place. I assure you that, in dollar per hour terms, this is going to be one of their least lucrative gigs, if not the absolute worst.

Their first job was fixing up the bunkers:

Tsukada-kun was quite a character at this point.

In the midst of their work, they had to get out of the way if players came through.

After that, they had to do heavy log removal, and here again Tsukada-kun overdid things – carrying loads he probably shouldn’t have attempted. At least it had their boss smiling.

Finally, they had to wash all the golf carts.

And here, the Totsuka Wiper was born:

In terms of time, it was a fairly short stint (only three hours), but because they got to work late in the day after traveling to Gold Coast and then searching for work, it was already 5:30 p.m. when they were done. Since Tsukada-kun and Hashimoto-kun had the other job at the restaurant starting at 6:00, they had to rush out.

We’ll get to see how they do in that second job next time.

As expected, this was an enjoyable episode because of the suspense about what kind of work they would get, but I think they undermined that suspense slightly by seeming a bit too easygoing, especially at the beach and while they were searching for work. I normally find Tsuakda-kun fun, but there were too many goofy moments from him this time (at the beach, while fixing the bunkers, while lifting the logs). He’s been taking on the role of silliness leader more than I feel he needs to, considering his other contributions.

I feel like this was just the first half of a two-part Gold Coast story, and I’ll have a better sense of how to assess their exploits in this episode after seeing the next one.
