What are two girls – one in a school uniform and one in plainclothes – planning to do to the elementary school that detective Hazama (Marius Yo) attends in Kodomo Keishi (コドモ警視)? Probably something surprising.

There’s nothing surprising about the classroom scene that follow, though. As usual, Yumi (Minamino Saki) has a plan to get Hazama. This time, it’s a contest of some sort, but Hazama rejects the notion as politely as he can manage.

He walks out leaving a disappointed Yumi in his wake. Before he can reflect on this, he hears a shout and finds Takamura (Shaku Yumiko) at the base of the stairs in pain.

Well, everyone likes Takamura, so it doesn’t take much to get Hazama involved this time. Did someone push Takamura down the stairs? If so, who and why?

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 009 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 010

Hazama’s teacher tries to scoop Hazama in the hope of winning Takamura’s everlasting adoration.

But Hazama is much more serious about getting to work.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 014 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 015

They return to the scene of the crime, and Hazama follows the stairs up to the roof of the building, where he finds a girl – the one in plainclothes we saw at the beginning of the episode (Hazama’s school thankfully doesn’t require uniforms).

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 016 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 017 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 018

Hazama’s teacher puts the blame on her immediately, accusing her of pushing Takamura. Well, he’s hardly known for being reasonable.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 019

With a smile, she comes up with a crazy and lengthy story that I couldn’t follow (I don’t even have Japanese subtitles to help me look up the words). Her behavior is extremely strange, though, and she throws in all sorts of stuff, including teleportation and claiming to be an esper.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 020 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 021 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 022 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 023

When they clearly don’t believe her tall tale, she insists that she has evidence that she’s special – two photos which show her in different places at the same time (or one minute apart, anyway).

But really, there are so many ways that evidence could be fabricated, it’s not even worthwhile to bring the photos out. The newspapers she holds in the photos aren’t definitive evidence of the date – you can keep a paper for more than a day, after all. There’s always photoshop. And of course, in this case we know she has a twin – her counterpart who goes to the school with the uniforms. The different arrangement of the scarves is sort of a tip-off.

Perhaps there’s something else about the photos that makes this evidence more credible, since the characters all seem surprised.

At least Hazama quickly concludes that the girl isn’t an esper – I’m surprised he had to give it as much thought as he did, though.

Hazama has his talk with Takamura, and it’s a bit more poignant this time, since Takamura is the victim of the case. She seems to suspect the involvement of the organization Hazama is supposed to be directing his powers to hunt down.

Back to the esper girl, they confront her with Hazama’s conclusion that she doesn’t have special abilities after all . . .

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 044 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 045 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 046

. . . but they seem to mention everything except for the possibility that she has a twin, so she manages to keep them guessing.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 047Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 049Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 050Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 051

Oh, and then she runs into the stairwell and then they suddenly see her waving from the gate in front of the school.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 054 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 055

Really, this is getting tedious. Are identical twins less prevalent in Japan or something? And are we really supposed to believe that this girl had something to do with Takamura falling down the stairs?

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 056 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 057

Perhaps Hazama should go to an old friend from Kodomo Keisatsu who can shout some sense into him:

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 058 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 059

So really, there’s two mysteries involved here. One of them is so pedestrian that it’s pathetic. The other . . . well, you’ll have to watch to find out whether they tackled that one at all or not.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 062Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 067Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 069

This was probably the worst episode of the series so far. At the very least, they shouldn’t have tipped their hand at the beginning of the episode, showing the two girls. That way, at least the less perceptive or more superstitious viewer might have been led to wonder about the girl. The girl’s behavior was also extremely awkward and unsettling. Perhaps they were trying to give the impression that the girl was crazy enough to be responsible for what happened to Takamura, but there was no way that was ever going to be credible.

Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 070 Kodomo Keishi Ep 05 079

The positive note is that this episode appears to set up some better things ahead in the series. At the end of the episode, Hazama walks past a suspicious teacher clad in black. That’s more like it – someone who can create some more devilish plots for Hazama to untangle, perhaps leading up to a strong finale. It’s a good time to introduce an antagonistic teacher – too early, and you get tired of the character always hanging out in the shadows; too late, and it looks like the enemy was just thrown in for the finale.
