VS Arashi (VS 嵐 ) is a game show hosted by the idol group Arashi, who compete against a different team of entertainers every week. This time, their foes will be cast members from the drama “Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou”, but before we get to them, the Arashi members reflect on the fact that they have lost for four straight episodes.

Of course, there were some formidable teams, including two sports teams and one led by Aiba-kun. As Sakurai-san prompts the opposition to enter . . .

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 001

. . . we wonder whether the Biblia team will prove just as formidable, or if this will be Arashi’s first win in a month. The Biblia Koshodou team included Gouriki Ayame-san (剛力彩芽), AKIRA-san, Tanaka Kei-san ( 田中圭), Suzuki Kosuke-san (鈴木浩介), Kitagawa Hiromi-san (北川弘美), and Ninomiya-kun’s old friend Takahashi Katsumi-san (高橋克実). It’s a shame that Jesse-kun couldn’t be on it, but all six members of the Biblia team really do have higher billing than he does. In other words, no prominent member of the cast bowed out of this appearance – always a positive.

After some comments about how AKIRA-san’s character in the drama doesn’t fit his image as an EXILE member, plus one guests Haraichi (Iwai Yuuki-san and Sawabe Yuu-san) entered. The highlight of their entry was actually Aiba-kun’s reaction to whatever joke they were trying to pull.

The first game was Dual Curling, with Gouriki-san going head-to-head against Aiba-kun in a battle between stars of two dramas this season (Biblia and Last Hope).

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0062013.02.07 VS Arashi 007

Somehow, Aiba-kun decides that he’s close enough to Gouriki-san to shorten her name to “Gou-chan” even though they’ve hardly worked together (apparently just appearing on Nep League recently). That gets a good laugh from Gouriki-san, though.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 008

Who will gain the early lead for their team in this confrontation between two hyperactive high-tension personalities?

After that round, they do a 3-on-3 Dual Curling, with Kitagawa, Tanaka, and AKIRA going against MatsuJun and the Haraichi pair.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 011

I swear, AKIRA-san looks nervous throughout this whole show. Is he just humble and unassuming, or is he really unsure of himself?

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 012

He’s got ambitious help, though:

Will Matsumoto-kun get decent help from the two comedians?

The next game was Cliff Climb, and to my pleasant surprise, Gouriki-san decided to give it a go:

I have to admit, I was rooting for her to do well. She certainly has an active image, and I think it’s fair to say that she acquitted herself well in this episode.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 020

AKIRA-san, though was still iffy. Because of events to follow, I have to give away the fact that his performance in this game was . . . underwhelming. You’ll have to watch to find out why.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0212013.02.07 VS Arashi 022

Before they did the climb, Sakurai-san shared an EXILE-related experience.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0232013.02.07 VS Arashi 0242013.02.07 VS Arashi 025

For Arashi, the climbers were Ohno-san and Haraichi’s Sawabe-san. I doubt they would have had Sawabe-san do the climb if not for AKIRA-san’s flub, though that’s open for debate. Sawabe-san sure tries to claim that he’s sufficiently sporty.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0272013.02.07 VS Arashi 028

After all, the five supporters all look more fit for the task (though, as Sakurai-san has showed, appearances can be deceiving).

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0292013.02.07 VS Arashi 030

Ohno-san seems to completely ignore Sawabe-san’s antics.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 031

When Ohno-san reveals that he’s going first and doing the easy part . . . well, will Sawabe-san do worse than AKIRA-san or not?

The third game was . . . Falling Pipe! Yay!

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 036

I’ve been waiting to see the continuing revival of this game for a while, and I’m thrilled to see it is really going to be part of the rotation. For the Biblia round, Gouriki-san had to catch the pipes, and Sakurai-san got to pick the pipes and to try to distract her.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0372013.02.07 VS Arashi 0382013.02.07 VS Arashi 039

Gouriki-san has sure done her part today.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 040

Ninomiya-kun handled the Arashi half, and Takahashi-san was responsible for causing him as much trouble as possible.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0412013.02.07 VS Arashi 043

Even before the game, they got caught up in reminiscences . . .

. . . but this turned out to be part of the game after all, as Takahashi-san used the time while they were talking to covertly select the pipes.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0462013.02.07 VS Arashi 0492013.02.07 VS Arashi 050

Can Nino-kun recover from this underhanded trick?

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 051

There was a big flaw in Falling Pipe, though: they need to increase the points by a factor of two at least, and possibly even three. Right now, there’s no way it’ll have a substantial impact on the standings.

For once, Kicking Sniper was not the final game of the evening. Suzuki-san, Tanaka-san and AKIRA-san took care of it for the Biblia team.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 052

Suzuki-san has some ancient soccer experience, and despite being a basketball guy and totally useless in leg-related sports, Tanaka-san said he was confident.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 053

What about AKIRA-san, though? Can he make up for his earlier failures?

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 0542013.02.07 VS Arashi 0552013.02.07 VS Arashi 056

For Arashi, it was Iwai-san, Matsumoto-kun, and Sakurai-san.

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 057

Iwai-san was a soccer player in school with substantial experience, and sure looks like he’s going to take this seriously.

The final game this time was Korokoro Viking – far from my favorite game, and not the one that I was hoping would end a fine set of matches like this episode had been so far (Dual Curling, Cliff Climb, Falling Pipe, and Kicking Sniper). Ideally, I think Pinball Runner or the new game (the Popcorn one) should have been snuck in there, and that they should have left Kicking Sniper as the end game.

Anyway, Arashi had their fate in their own hands to close out the episode. Were they able to break their losing streak?

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 065

What’s Aiba-kun’s plan?

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 066

And will anyone take it seriously?

2013.02.07 VS Arashi 067

I think, especially on the strength of his part in the finale, the Most Omoshiroi Arashi has to be Aiba-kun. But is it because of a great success or a spectacular failure? You’ll have to watch to find out.

I think this was an excellent episode. Gouriki-san and AKIRA-san in particular were great guests, and Haraichi made some solid contributions. I also felt that the Arashi members were really into it this time – possibly because of their losing streak.

Of course, I was most enthusiastic about seeing Falling Pipe again, and hope they fix the points so that it is more relevant.
