Here are some of the single and album releases for February (i.e. releases from groups that I’m interested in tracking). My apologies if I missed a significant release – please mention the artist and title in a comment and I’ll update the list.

More complete listings are available on merchant websites (I use CD Japan’s list). For my part, I think there’s some value in also having a shortlist (especially for my own reference), so I’ll stick with this format.

February looks to be the complete opposite of the slow January, with all sorts of prominent groups packing the shortest month with releases.

While there’s plenty to watch for, foremost in my mind is puzzlement that Arashi and Tegomasu are both releasing singles on the same day – March 6th. Is there a mistake there? I thought Johnny’s usually avoided that to ensure their releases topped the charts, and in general didn’t like different groups competing for space.

Besides that, we’ve got all the senpai Johnny’s groups – SMAP, TOKIO, and V6  – represented. KAT-TUN and Kis-My-Ft2 have both been fairly consistent in their sales recently – will either one be able to surpass expectations, or will they just chug along?

I’m probably going to continue to support Dream5 and Sako Tomohisa-kun by getting those releases, though Sako-kun’s album doesn’t look like it has much new material.

I guess the real elephant in the month is AKB48. Will they show strong numbers to silence those who have already declared their decline, or add more evidence to that currently iffy hypothesis? Frankly, after seeing Minegishi Minami-san demoted and with a shaved head to show contrition to fans who apparently demand that their idols have no life outside their profession, AKB48 has given me a real reason to root against them. Minegishi-san has long been one of the few AKB48 members I’ve known by name  and enjoyed watching, and not only do I not care if she’s in a relationship with someone – I’m glad to hear it. Anyway, that’s my two sentences about it.

Altogether, we are definitely headed into an interesting February. Let’s hope that the surprises from here on out are all positive.
