While some shows have hit their groove, with their ratings free of surprises, some of the shows I enjoy the most lost ground last week, and I don’t think competition from other shows is adequate to explain some of these moves. I also don’t think these shows suddenly got less interesting (especially GTO, which I definitely thought would hold strong with its culmination approaching).

More information on the ratings, including those for prime time variety shows and dramas I don’t cover, can be found at the usual bi-weekly TokyoHive rundown. The most recent of those is here.

Well, I said I’d be surprised if the ratings for GTO dropped on episode 9, and sure enough, I am. And what a drop! While it was up against a new drama, that drama wasn’t a ratings monster – grabbing only about 8% of viewers. There was plenty of pie to go around.

Beginners! is also approaching its Olympics low. Is it because the turn away from comedy has viewers confused (after all, the tone has shifted a lot from the first episode)?

While not a huge absolute difference, the drop in Sprout’s ratings is significant, since it breaks the virtuous trend that had it breaking the 3% mark.

Besides those three, the other shows look quite stable with their audience base. Looks like it’s about time for me to check out next season . . . .
