HamaKisu (濱キス) is a new half-hour variety show hosted by Hamaguchi Masaru (濱口優)and Kis-My-Ft2, hence the name of the show. Actually, the full name is longer, but since even Japanese and Chinese sources refer to it as 濱キス, we’ll just go with that. The premise of the show is that Hamaguchi is training Kis-My-Ft2 as entertainers on variety shows, and they are competing against him in the process.

HamaKisu Title

Since the training last week and this week have been physical in nature, and Hamaguchi has more than a decade on the Kis-My-Ft2 members, this is no easy battle for the teacher. However, it seems that the young idols still have a lot to learn from their senpai. It is actually refreshing to see the less-than-perfect side of idols, and it looks like the Kis-My-Ft2 members are willing to put up with some embarrassment for the sake of the show. I definitely give them points for that.

This time, the challenge is submerged swimming (I don’t know the technical term for this), with each contestant swimming as far underwater as they can without taking a breath. I’ll leave out the final results for all the swims to avoid any spoilers.

Swimming Competition

First up, we had the teacher for today – Audrey’s Kasuga (春日) – who at one point held a second-place record for this sort of swimming. In contrast to his normal goofy self, he was all-business today after getting through his intro, giving pointers, then proceeding with a very elegant swim. The others on the show remarked that he showed great economy in his swimming style, clearly trying to keep his heart rate down.

Hamaguchi had a different tactic – go fast to get as much distance as possible in a short time. Did it work for him? You’ll have to watch to find out. (The caption under him in the image says “Is he all right with this pace?” – kono peesu de daijoubu?)

After him, we get Tamamori and Miyata from Kis-My-Ft2 today, with three others going next week. Tamamori looked smooth in his swimming while Miyata looked . . . well, he looked like a fish out of water, actually. But how much does style get you compared to lung capacity?

The show concluded with a VTR of Hamaguchi showing up at a Kis-My-Ft2 concert in Tokyo Dome and being appropriately awed by the sight and sound of 55,000 fans. A television entertainer and comic doesn’t come face to face with even a hundredth of that number at a time, after all, though I’m sure Hamaguchi also played up his shock because that’s what he does for a living. He looked a bit stiff and nervous walking out on stage to surprise the Kis-My-Ft2 members, and it was sort of nice to see him out of his element, too.

55000 people!?What a Sound!!

I’m not entirely sure what went on between Hamaguchi and Kis-My-Ft2 on stage, but 1000 large rice crackers (センベイ – senbei) and the need to eat them was involved.

Altogether, it was an entertaining show. Since next week just continues this week’s challenges, I probably won’t do a new post for that. It would have been better if they had a hour-long show, but it’s tough to get those in good time slots (just ask Arashi, who held half-hour late-late-night slots for at least six years before their first hour-long show).
